The Motorola Cliq: Great in Theory but Falls Short in the Real World
The Motorola Cliq is a remarkable phone and an experiment that attempts to merge the online world with a real world phone. However, the Additional features end up hurting more often than they help.
The Motorola Cliq combines Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook into one big, incoherent mess that you can tap into through your cell phone. I think these social networking sites are enough to satisfy but the Motorola Cliq goes even further by applying photo services like PhotoBucket to their phone. Add in some e-mail capabilities and there is literally nothing you can't do with the Motorola Cliq.
The Motorola Cliq uses a custom skin that lists each of the above services so that you don't have to click through numerous apps to find what you want. Essentially, this boils down to three main widgets: status text for each of the social networking sites, a messaging widget that collects your e-mails from your various accounts that can be scrolled through like a series of cards, and a Happenings widget that works like a Facebook feed but incorporates Twitter, Facebook and MySpace. Your Facebook e-mails and direct messages from Twitter are stored in a separate area to keep them apart from your Yahoo, Outlook and Gmail accounts.
It all piles on and after a few days my e-mails, messages, updates and feeds became too overwhelming to manage. The Motorola Cliq should be a phone before everything else but it seems to forget this. All of my twitter followers and facebook friends ended up in my phone contacts which caused me a lot of headaches.
Design
It's a shame that it's so overburdened with Internet foolishness, because the Motorola Cliq is actually quite a smart phone. As a piece of hardware, it's smooth on the front, ridged on the back and heavy enough that you'll feel like you're holding something important, and not a lousy piece of plastic. The Motorola Cliq feels pretty slim, even with that sliding keyboard that's becoming more and more popular these days. The display is 3.1 inches, big enough to be easy to read thanks to the bright light Motorola provides you with, and the touchscreen is sensitive and instantly responsive. The Motorola Cliq also includes a 5.2 megapixel camera and camcorder. The battery is equivalent to a PalmPre or iPhone 3GS, which is highly disappointing since it pretty much guarantees a dead battery by the end of a day's usage.
The Motorola Cliq is a remarkable phone and an experiment that attempts to merge the online world with a real world phone. Additional features wind up being not only extra, but even overwhelming, particularly if you use more than one social networking site at one time. The physical phone is solid and stylish, and the calls sound great. But the primary reason I bought the Motorola Cliq was take advantage of their groundbreaking work at integrating social networking into real life. When these turned out to be a hassle, I had no further use for the phone.
