Swine Flu & Preventive Steps in Schools

In light of the newest flu strain running wild, one schools answers or recommendations in fighting it off with preventative cleaning could assist others in their fight.

The amount of times you see children wipe their runny noses with their open hands or clothing or cough and/or sneeze into their hands, if you're lucky, or worse, into the open air, or even worse yet, on a fellow classmate is pretty much a daliy activity with youngsters. Now multiply those nasty thoughts that I have just built within your mind and actually imagine their escalation. How many times in your school have you actually seen a child, after having a sneezing, runny nose, or coughing moment, wash their hands? Case in point of exactly how the spread, of even the common cold or flu, can quickly arrive at levels of epidemic proportions. Now bring in the Swine Flu and it's running rampant before you can even think of whipping out the antibacterial wet wipes. Those cute little hands have now gone from that sneeze zone to door handles, toilet handles, light switches, desks, tables, chairs, crayons that they share with everyone at their table, etc. etc. etc.

We combat the flu and cold season in a number of ways, and now with the threat of swine flu added to the mix, we've become that much more aggressive with the fight. Clorox Bleach Cleanup is our favorite method of attack, continuously wiping down every touchable surface in our school from light switches to door handles (doors and cabinets/cupboards), to tables, chairs, and counter-tops, to telephones, computer keyboards, sinks, toilets, etc. Bleach everything!!! It will kill 99.99% of pretty much anything out there that can attack ones immune system, including the flu virus. And yes, it is most certainly effective. But beware, it will also kill your clothes, carpet and other materials if even a drop hits any colored areas. Use caution when leaning over tables or counters to wipe them down. It IS a bleach after all.

The level of sick children we have had in the past two years is considerably low compared to other academies and schools of the same size and demographics as ours, and we solely believe it is due to the continuous and consistent cleaning we do throughout the entire building. However, It is, and must be, a never ending, regimented practice or it won't be effective. The importance lies not only in the consistency of times conducted, but also in the consistency of objects cleaned. It must be all or nothing and all the time.

Also, send the children home, or promote the idea of keeping them at home if they show any signs or symptoms. Allowing them to drag in sick, and be hugged or hug their friends, is not very high on the preventative measures list, and unfortunately as great as Clorox Cleanup is on inanimate objects, they haven't yet come up with a version that is safe enough to spray humans with.

Pretty much a great dose of common sense is one of the greatest antidotes for fighting this newest strain of flu and any other form of cold or flu for that matter.
