Product Review: Garmin Forerunner 205 Fitness GPS Receiver
Many people scratch their heads and wonder why a runner would need a GPS unit. What, exactly, are the chances of forgetting about where you're at, how to....
The Forerunner 205 is designed for runners who need to know where they're at, and where they're going - those who run up mountains, through hiking trails, in the country, or for a dozen or more miles in one shot.
If you're a runner and you're considering purchasing the Garmin Forerunner 205 GPS unit, read on. This review will detail the specs and whether or not they are worth the price of the unit.
Body
The 205 is, first and foremost, small. This is necessary, as it is intended to be strapped around a wrist or clipped to the belt while running, and anything larger will get in the way. The 205 is watch style, and may look a little corny when worn.
The device is larger than a watch, so don't expect a small device - it fits neatly in the center of a palm. The device is gray, and it is plastic, as is the strap. The buttons are located along the outside edge of the GPS, and can be pressed fairly easily with the opposite hand.
Features
This unit will record previous running sessions and will record the info for future use, something competitive types will enjoy. This feature will allow you to pull up last weeks run and race against it, in hopes of getting better.
A cool feature is the virtual partner. This interesting parameter allows you to create a virtual partner with whatever settings you would like. You choose a start time and then begin to race. You can then monitor how far behind or ahead you are of this partner. While not the most accurate in the world, you can input info for future competitors and practice against them with this device.
Finally, the 205 uses Garmin's workout software, which allows you to create or choose workouts and upload them to the device. You can then follow those workouts from your wrist.
Reception
The reception isn't the strongest in the world, but it is still able to pick up most signals. Unless you take your daily runs in an underground parking lot, you won't have any issues.
Issues
The screen is a bit small, and the text is more vertical than horizontal, which can make it hard for some to read.
Conclusion
If you need something small and easy to use, this is the device for you. The buttons are a great improvement over the previous unit, and the features allow you to monitor your own progress, as well as design workouts and race against invisible partners.
