The Minnesota Vikings Are Tempting Fate by Playing Peterson: A Fan's Take
A fan's look at why the Minnesota Vikings hurried the recovery of Adrian Peterson.
Don't get me wrong, seeing Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson back on the field makes me a happy fan. I am amazed at Peterson's work ethic and his ability to get back on the field after tearing his ACL on Christmas Eve 2020.
I, for one, never thought Peterson would be participating in a full training camp, let alone getting ready for action in week three of the preseason. Most athletes need a year to get back in shape. Peterson took less than nine months to apparently be ready.
The operative word in the last paragraph is apparently. Peterson has been chomping at the bit to get back on the field, while the coaches and front office have been trying -in vain- to keep him out as long as possible.
History says that NFL running backs who suffer the same injury as Peterson take a season or two to get back to their former selves, if at all. Some never regain their previous form. Is Peterson that much more a physical specimen than those who traveled this road to recovery before? The jury is still out.
I am afraid the Vikings, who are desperate for positives after a dismal 3-13 record in 2020, are taking a big chance letting Peterson play so soon. I sincerely hope the Vikings know what they are getting themselves into by letting Peterson seemingly dictate his status with the team. If Peterson goes down and misses any significant time this season, the Vikings' big wigs will feel the pain in the form of rabid fans who want to know why Peterson wasn't brought back at a slower pace.
The Vikings are not contenders this season. Even if Peterson was 100 percent this team has more holes than one offseason can plug. Why is it so important to get Peterson on the field, when losing him a second time could possibly end his career or at least his tenure in Minnesota? Personally, I'd let Peterson sit for at least the first four games of the season. The schedule is somewhat favorable and that extra month could really benefit Peterson.
With four Super Bowl losses, a handful of other heart breaking defeats, the death of Korey Stringer and the Randy Moss fiasco, the Vikings have enough bad karma in their history that they don't need to tempt fate by rushing Peterson.
The negatives simply outweigh the positives in this situation.
