Bush Shoe-Throwing Incident Overshadows Last Visit to Iraq
President Bush met with some shoes in his last visit to Iraq, as a Muslim journalist threw them at him during a press conference, in a sign of great protest to the Muslim world.
As Bush took a press conference, an Iraqi journalist in the crowd of reporters emerged. The man, later identified as Muntadhar al-Zeidi, threw his two shoes at the President, who was able to dodge being hit by them.
In Muslim culture, throwing a shoe at someone is one of the greatest insults imaginable. Islamic culture teaches Muslims to remove their shoes before taking sanctuary in a mosque, and to avoid pointing their feet or showing soles.
Whereas shoe-throwing would be shrugged off as a comical act in America, in the Muslin world, it has already emerged as an important symbolic protest. Shoe throwing was also used when Saddam Hussain's statue was toppled after he was overthrown.
After Bush dodged the shoes and al-Zeidi was taken away, he screamed "This is your farewell kiss, you dog!" On the other hand, Bush shrugged it off as one of the more weirder incidents during his Presidency.
President Bush referred to the shoe throwing as a "sign of a free society" although al-Zeidi's television station, Al Baghdadia, released a statement saying that his release would be more in line with freedom of expression. Already, thousands of Muslims are protestingin favor of al-Zeidi and demanding his release.
After al-Zeidi was taken into custody, Muslim protestors burned American flags and threw shoes at an American tank in Najaf. As for the shoes themselves, they are held as evidence by Iraqi authorities, as they try to determine if al-Zeidi was paid to throw them at Bush.
Last year, al-Zeidi was the victim of a kidnapping by Shiite militants, who held him for three days before releasing him. No details were released on the circumstances of that incident by al-Zeidi's station.
The shoe-throwing overshadowed what was supposed to be Bush's farewell visit to Iraq and to the Middle East before he leaves office. Bush's next farewell stop was in Afghanistan, where he addressed troops and met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
While the shoe-throwing will remain a hot issue in the Muslim world, in America, it is more easy to laugh at and will give the late night hosts one last holiday gift.
