Iraqi Journalist Throws Shoes at President Bush
During the middle of a news conference in Baghdad on Sunday, Iraqi journalist Muntazer al-Zaidi hurled two shoes at President Bush. To be sure, some will consider al-Zaidi to be something of a hero.
One of the shoes hit the American and Iraqi flags that were standing behind Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki; the other missed the mark entirely, rocketing against the wall with a thud.
AFP reports that just before al-Zaidi threw the shoes, he leaped from his chair and shouted in Arabic, "It is the farewell kiss, you dog."
The act demonstrates in no uncertain terms the enormous level of contempt that Mr. Al-Zaidi has for President Bush. In Arabic culture, showing the bottom of a shoe is considered offensive, and to purposely do so is the ultimate insult. To illustrate this, one need only think back to the aftermath of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, when images of Iraqis smacking a toppled statue of Saddam Hussein with the bottom of their shoes were shown all over the world.
As the Secret Service wrestled al-Zaidi to the ground, the president said, "Don't worry about it. So what if the guy threw a shoe at me." Later on, the President quipped, "It was a size 10."
The purpose of President Bush's surprise visit to the Iraqi capital was to underscore the recent reduction in violence due to the troop surge, and to tout a U.S.-Iraq security agreement which stipulates that U.S. troops are to withdraw from Iraq by the end of 2020.
To be sure, al-Zaidi is not alone in his hostility toward President Bush (he will no doubt be considered a hero by many), whose rationale for waging war was based on the false assumption - due to faulty intelligence - that Iraq harbored a cache of WMD. Bush has also referred to Iraq as the central front in the war on terrorism. Most Americans, however, do not believe this to be the case. Nor, for that matter, do many experts on terrorism. The enormously unpopular Iraq war has already claimed the lives of 4,209 members of the U.S. military, and has cost American taxpayers a staggering $576 billion.
One cannot help but think how helpful that $576 billion would be were it possible to pump it back into the devastated U.S. economy. On the other hand, one also cannot help but think of al-Zaidi's fate were it to have been Saddam Hussein that he hurled shoes at rather than President Bush. I shudder to think how Saddam's henchmen would have dealt with him. Hence it cannot be denied that, since the fall of Saddam, Iraq has been enjoying an unprecedented level of freedom.
