On Being Short
Being short isn't so bad if you don't want to be a model or basketball star. It's not so good if capris make you look like you are wearing high-water pants or if you can't reach things at the grocery store.
As a teenager, I liked my height and weight. I was comfortable with myself and had a good self-image. There were times it was a little bit of a struggle slow-dancing with a boy who was almost six feet tall. I seemed to be drawn to tall boys. But, for the most part, my height did not bother me. When my friends and I discussed possible careers we thought we'd like to follow, I briefly thought about becoming an airline stewardess until I discovered one had to be at least 5 feet 6 inches to be considered. That probably has changed over the many years since I was a teen.
During the last few years of high school and when I returned home from college for vacations, one of my best friends was a girl who was 5 feet 9 inches tall. Sometimes we went shopping in our small downtown, walking down the street from store to store, looking like the female version of the comic strip - Mutt and Jeff because of the difference in our heights. We laughed about it all the time. And in those years since, I have had two more very good female friends who were also 5 feet 9 inches. It goes without saying that most of the men I've met, including my ex-husband, brothers-in-law and co-workers have all been a lot taller than I am.
My height didn't start to annoy me until clothing styles started to change. It seemed all of a sudden, styles were being made for women who had longer legs than I did. There were very few petite shops where I lived, and the ones we did have had higher prices for those petite sizes. You would think the prices would be lower, since there was less material to work with. Sears was one of the few places I could find affordable dress pants for work for someone who was less than 5 feet 4 inches - what was labeled as "average". If I found any type of long pants - whether for work or just jeans - many times I had to hem them myself instead of paying someone to do the tailoring. There was also a little bit of a problem when knickers/capris came back in style. Most of the capris at the stores where I live now come down to just above my ankles. They look more like high-water pants, something that shrunk in the dryer that should not be worn by someone who has thin little legs. So, although many women own at least one pair of capris, I haven't even attempted to buy a pair. I still enjoyed being short and petite.
Now as I've gotten even older, I have found that I am no longer 5 feet 2 inches. My height now is 5 feet ½ inch. I'm no longer only one hundred pounds, but I am not overweight. All of my children are taller than I am, and two of my grandchildren are taller than I am. I've found that I need to use a step stool in order to get things from the top shelves in my kitchen cabinets. That is okay - at least I have the step stool to use and I'm careful. But have you ever tried going grocery shopping and the item you want or need is located far back, on the top shelf that you can't reach, even on your tiptoes? And of course, there is no one in that aisle who can help you. You have to make a decision - do you really need or want that item enough to go searching for an employee who can help get it for you. Many times, after looking up and down several aisles, or even waiting for a tall customer to happen by, I leave the store without that one or two items I really wanted. Then I think - it would be nice if grocery stores had those stools on wheels that they have at the local library so folks can reach books on the upper shelves. What would be better - and safer - is if the stores would lower their shelves a little.
So, being short has its ups and downs. Sure, if I was a little taller, and still the same weight, I'd have a fabulous figure right now and I'd be able to wear almost any style clothing and reach items at the store. But, nice things come in small packages.
