New Wearable Cameras Automatically Capture Your Life in 30 Second Intervals
New wearable cameras that snap pictures automatically can be used to record your life.
Imagine if as you moved through your day, that there was a camera that recorded everything you saw from your perspective, almost as if capturing everything from behind your eyes. That would be sort of like having something capture part of the stuff that goes on in your brain. While that last part might still be a ways off, the first part is not; two camera makers have just introduced models that a person wears around their neck, that automatically take pictures of whatever is in front of the wearer, every 30 seconds, in effect, capturing a record of the person's day to day activity, as seen from the point of view of that person. The first one, as described by Gizmag is the Memoto. The second, described by EndGadget is the Autographer.
Both cameras serve to fill the same promise, chronicling the day-to-day existence of a human being from their very own perspective. It's as if a blogger were able to show his or her reader's the actual experiences they normally have to use words to describe. Both go about it in roughly the same ways as well by including sensors in the cameras to ensure that the pictures they take are always of something that is dead ahead, no matter the angle of the person wearing it. Both also have gobs of memory to allow for holding all those pictures that are taken, which amount to thousands every day. They also both have a means for dumping the pictures either onto a computer or a website for sharing.
Where the two cameras differ is in how they look. The Memoto is a very small square with rounded edges, about the size of pacemaker. The Autographer is longer and tampered providing a more aesthetically pleasing look. It's all about personal taste. One is rather mod, the other stylish.
What both these cameras signal however, is the dawn of a new form of self expression. They offer users a means for recording their lives and then showing edited versions of the interesting stuff. A way to take the concept of blogging to a new higher plane that may or may not actually offer readers anything more than simple words did in the past. But then, the same can be said for users that prefer to post pictures on their Facebook page, rather than strings of words describing events. It's all a sign that we are moving from the word, to the image, because it's simpler, and requires less of the person doing the posting.
